We are one of the world’s largest investor-owned utilities.

Electricity

We own and operate the Electricity Transmission network in England and Wales. We operate but do not own the Scottish Transmission networks. Our electricity business is split into the Electricity Transmission Owner, which owns, builds and maintains the network, and the Electricity System Operator which operates the network to balance supply and demand.

We do not own or operate electricity generation or regional distribution networks in the UK, and we don't supply electricity to household consumers. We’re in the middle, connecting sources of power to the lower voltage networks.

Gas

We own and operate the gas National Transmission System in Great Britain, with day-to-day responsibility for balancing supply and demand. Our gas business is split into the Transmission Owner, which owns, builds and maintains the network, and the System Operator which operates the network to balance supply and demand. We do not produce gas in the UK.

The Transmission system includes high pressure pipes, compressor stations and storage facilities, all of which help keep large quantities of gas flowing through the network. We do not supply gas to household consumers in the UK and no longer own any regional gas distribution networks.
