Electricity System Operator

Fintan Slye explains why it's important to get involved in our business plans

Welcome to Electricity System Operator

As system operator of Great Britain’s electricity transmission network, we sit at the heart of the nation’s energy system. We’re tackling some of the most pressing energy challenges.

The energy sector is undergoing massive transformation. Driven by innovation in technology, systems and processes, new markets are emerging and developing. As consumers become more connected, their interactions with the energy system are changing. Decarbonisation is creating a new landscape in which different types of power are generated, more suppliers compete and consumers are driven to reduce energy consumption.

The Electricity System Operator (ESO) becomes a legally separate business in April 2019. RIIO 2 will be the first time the ESO has had its own bespoke price control. We need to develop a regulatory framework for RIIO 2 that helps the ESO do two things. Firstly, ensure security of supply in the most affordable way. Secondly, to support the decarbonisation of the energy system.

As Director of the GB System Operator, I look across the electricity and gas systems. The price control for the Gas System Operator will fall under the National Grid Gas licence. My teams will be working to ensure that our submissions and the final settlement drive efficiency across the whole energy system.

To do that, we must work together. We can only be successful in our role if we effectively engage our customers and stakeholders. Our business plan will be driven by your needs and by our commitment to provide value for consumers.

I’m very optimistic about this approach. Talk to us. Give us your views. It’s vital that we have your input on what our future plans should be.

I look forward to working with you and I hope you find this site both useful and informative.
