What we do

We manage the Gas Transmission System as well as the supply and demand for gas across Great Britain

We own and operate the gas National Transmission System (NTS) in Great Britain, with day-to-day responsibility for balancing supply and demand. Our network comprises approximately* 7,660 kilometres (4,760 miles) of high-pressure pipe and 618 above-ground installations.

We provide a service to the gas industry ranging from producers, processors, storage, transmission and distribution networks. We also supply to some industrial and commercial users.

Transmission

The transmission system comprises of pipes, compressor stations and above ground installations.

In Great Britain, gas enters the transmission system through importation and reception terminals and interconnectors and may include gas previously held in storage. Compressor stations located along the network play a vital role in keeping large quantities of gas flowing through the system.  Our System Operator has the day-to-day responsibility for balancing supply and demand.

Production and importation

The gas used in Great Britain is mainly sourced from gas fields in the North and Irish seas, piped from Europe or imported as Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG). We do not produce gas in the UK.

There are seven gas reception terminals, three LNG importation terminals and three interconnectors connecting Great Britain via undersea pipes with Ireland, Belgium and the Netherlands. Importers bring LNG from the Middle East, the Americas and other places.

Supply

Pipeline shippers purchase gas from producers for suppliers, who in turn sell it to their customers. Our role is to transport the shippers' gas to their customers. Customers then pay the supplier for the cost of gas and for its transportation. We do not supply gas to consumers.
